Solution:

We are given a diagram of a number line with a number of evenly spaced tick marks. We can represent the distance between each tick mark as n. Let’s sketch the diagram.

Statement One Alone: 

x = 1/2

Using our diagram we can see that:

0 + n + n + n = x

0 + 3n = x

3n = ½

n = 1/6

Since we know that the spacing between each tick mark is 1/6, we can determine the value of y. Statement one alone is sufficient to answer the question. We can eliminate answer choices B, C, and E.

Statement Two Alone: 

y – x = 2/3

Using our diagram we can see that:

y – x = 4n

2/3 = 4n

(2/3)/4 = n

1/6 = n

Since we know that the spacing between each tick mark is 1/6, we can determine the value of y. Statement two is also sufficient to answer the question.
