GMAT OFFICIAL GUIDE DS – If x < 0...

If x < 0…

Solution:

We are given that x is less than zero, and we must determine whether y is greater than zero.

Statement One Alone:

x/y < 0

The information from statement one tells us that x divided by y is negative. We are given that x is a negative number, and we also know that a negative number divided by a positive number will yield a negative number; therefore, y must be positive. Statement one alone is sufficient to answer the question. We can eliminate answer choices B, C, and E.

Statement Two Alone:

y – x > 0

We are given that y – x > 0, which can be rearranged to:

y > x

From our given information we know that x is less than zero. Since y is greater than x, y can be positive, negative, or zero. Statement two is not sufficient to answer the question.
