Solution:

We are asked to determine the value of 10 percent of y. Putting “10 percent of y” into a mathematical expression we have:

0.1y= ?

Statement One Alone:

5 percent of y is 60.

We can create the following equation with the information from statement one:

0.05y = 60

y = 60/0.05

y = 1200

Since y = 1200, 0.1y = 0.1 x 1200 = 120.

Statement one alone is sufficient to answer the question. We can eliminate answer choices B, C, and E.

Statement Two Alone:

y is 80 percent of 1,500.

Using similar logic to what we did in statement one, we know that statement two is enough to determine the value of 0.1y. However, for the purpose of practice, let’s complete the work below to get a value of 0.1y. Let’s determine y, using the information from statement two.

y =0.8 x 1,500

y = 1200

Since y = 1200, 0.1y = 0.1 x 1200 = 120.
