Solution:

We start by simplifying the given equation, (4-x)/(2+x) = x. We first multiply both sides by 2+x. Thus we have:

4 – x = x(2 + x)

4 – x = 2x + x^2

4 = 3x + x^2

x^2 + 3x – 4 = 0

Before moving any further we note that we are not being asked for the value of x but rather the value of x^2 + 3x – 4.

So see that x^2 + 3x – 4 = 0.
