Solution:
We must determine whether rw = 0. The zero product property states that, in order for the product of r and w to equal zero, either r is 0, or w is 0, or both r and w are zero.
Statement One Alone:
−6 < r < 5
Since r could be either zero or a non-zero number, the product of r and w may or may not be zero. Statement one alone is not sufficient to answer the question. We can eliminate answer choices A and D.
Statement Two Alone:
6 < w < 10
Since we do not have any information about r, we do not know whether the product of r and w is zero. Statement two alone is not sufficient to answer the question. We can eliminate answer choice B.
Statements One and Two Together:
Using the information from statements one and two together, we still do not have enough information to answer the question.
For example, if r = 0 and w = 8, then rw = 0. However, if r = 1 and w = 9, then rw = 9, which is not equal to 0.
