Solution:
We are given that a number of people wrote down one of the first 30 positive integers. We need to determine whether any of these integers were written down by more than one of the people.
Thus, we really need to determine whether there were more than 30 people or whether there were 30 people or fewer, to determine whether two of them wrote down the same number. If we can determine that there were more than 30 people who wrote down the integers, then we can determine that more than one person wrote down a particular integer.
Statement One Alone:
The number of people who wrote down an integer was greater than 40.
Since we know the number of people who wrote down an integer was greater than 40, we know that at least one of the integers was written down by more than one of the people. Statement one is sufficient to answer the question. We can eliminate answer choices B, C, and E.
Statement Two Alone:
The number of people who wrote down an integer was less than 70.
Using the information in statement two, we see that the number of people who wrote down an integer could be greater than 30 or less than or equal to 30. Thus, we cannot determine whether any of the integers were written down by more than one of the people. Statement two is not sufficient to answer the question.
