Solution:
We start by simplifying the given equation, (4-x)/(2+x) = x. We first multiply both sides by 2+x. Thus we have:
4 – x = x(2 + x)
4 – x = 2x + x^2
4 = 3x + x^2
x^2 + 3x – 4 = 0
Before moving any further we note that we are not being asked for the value of x but rather the value of x^2 + 3x – 4.
So see that x^2 + 3x – 4 = 0.
